Why No Room at the Inn? The New Ark in the Stable

There is an often overlooked detail in the Christmas Story. Why was there no room at the inn in Bethlehem for Mary and Joseph? It was foretold in the Old Testament that there would be no room for Mary and Joseph at the inns of Bethlehem.  The readings from the Christmas liturgy give us a special insight into the Nativity Story. The First Reading from Morning Mass on December 24 (Cycle A) comes from 2 Samuel 7 :  When King David was settled in his palace, and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God dwells in a tent!” Nathan answered the king,“Go, do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you.” But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said: “Go, tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Should you build me a house to dwell in? King David returns home from his victories on the battlefield. These victories were won because David's armies carried the Read More December 24, 2016

The Angels are Coming ...

The Angels are coming ... The Archangel Gabriel appears to Zechariah to announce the birth of his son, John the Baptist (Luke 1:11-19). Gabriel next appears in Galilee to the Virgin Mary, saying, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!" The angel announced the conception of her Son and the coming of the Messiah.  Next, the angels appear to some of the poorest and most marginalized classes of people in First Century Israel: the Shepherds (Luke 2:9-15). The angels do not present themselves before the thrones and dominions, before Herod and the Roman officials, but to the poor sheep herders.  To these, the herald angels sing in chorus, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men" (Luke 2:14).  Soon, we, too, will be singing the Gloria at the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord.  The Angels are coming ... Lord of the Rings Symbolism: Gandalf & The Resurrection

Have you ever noticed how similar Gandalf’s death and resurrection are to Christ’s? Let’s take a moment to walk through the events immediately preceding Gandalf the Grey’s resurrection as Gandalf the White. Who is Gandalf? He is one of the five Istari (Wizards) sent to Middle-earth by the Valar in the Third Age. He's the wisest of the Maiar, who are minor Ainu. The Ainu, which means "Holy Ones," were the first of the creations of Eru Ilúvatar. The Maiar were born of his thought. This is very much like the Word of God, which is made flesh. The wizards – Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, et al. – were each a Maiar, and existed before Elves, Men, and Dwarves. So, how old is this guy? Gandalf states that “300 lives of men, I have walked this earth.”Taking the average life expectancy of man, conservatively, at 50, that would put Gandalf at the ripe old age of 15,000. That’s fifteen thousand years old!  After 15,000 long years, Gandalf is about to die … Read More December 16, 2016

Fathers Determine Their Children's Faith, Study Shows

A recent Swiss study revealed the following: “It is the religious practice of the father of the family that, above all, determines the future attendance at or absence from church of the children.”  I am certainly not denying the pivotal role of the mother in the spiritual upbringing of their children. However, it is the example of the Father, sine qua non, that determines whether the children will be members of the Body of Christ. This is because, as I've argued elsewhere, of the natural priesthood of the father -- the father is the priest of the domestic church.  The study was conducted by the Swiss government in conjunction with other European nations to study demographic changes. Its discoveries involving religion were just a by-product of the research. The study is entitled  “The Demographic Characteristics of the Linguistic and Religious Groups in Switzerland” by Werner Haug and Phillipe Warner of the Federal Statistical Office, Neuchatel (1). Sounds like pretty hot stu Read More December 07, 2016

Happy Feast of St. Nick! TOP 10 St. Nicholas Memes

On this, the feast of St. Nicholas of Myrna , we honor the good Saint for all his good Christian deeds ... especially punching the heretic, Arius, in the face. So how did St. Nick become the patron saint of the left hook? Home of the best St. Nicholas memes . Arius , a priest from Alexandria, taught that the Second Person of the Trinity, the Son, was a creation of God the Father, not co-eternal with Him. Arius' teaching is summarized in his quote: "There was a time when the Son was not."  In short, Arius denied the divinity of Christ.  Nevertheless,  Arianism was the orthodox position in the Church until the Council of Nicaea in 325AD. Even after Arianism was rejected by the Church, however, it remained the majority position for some time. This was in part due t o  Roman emperors, including  Constantius II  and  Valens , and many of the  ruling elite adopting the position.  Actual footage of Jesus watching events unfold at the Council of Nicaea Arianism wo Read More December 06, 2016
