Did You Know ... The Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge was NOT an Apple?

Imagine the scene. The serpent is speaking to Eve. He is tempting her with the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Eve is holding in her hand an item of produce. A fruit. The fruit. The fruit which, when eaten, will violate God's Law, break man's covenant with God, and open the floodgates of sin and death into a hitherto pristine Earth.

What does the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge look like?

Did you imagine in the cradle of Eve's hand an ... apple?

Wrong! It wasn't an apple. Did you know that the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was NOT an apple?

If not an apple, then ... what was it?

[Also, stay tuned for my comic strip at the end!]

First off, if you don't believe me, re-read Genesis 3 (reproduced below).

I promise you, the word "apple" doesn't appear anywhere in Genesis 3:1-7:

Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.

Isn't that weird? If you're like me when I was first told this, you might be feeling like this is some kind of trick. It's not.

What is the Tree of Knowledge a Metaphor For? Is it Much More Than a Metaphor?

So, where did we get the idea that the fruit of Original Sin was an apple? Why does every Children's Bible and every Sunday school class have an image of Adam, Eve, and the apple?

Why does every painting ever of the Fall of Man depict an apple? Was Michelangelo just lying to us? Milton?

No! It's a pun. A Latin pun, no less.

What is the Tree of Knowledge Fruit?

To get to the bottom of this, we have to go all the way back to the fourth century A.D. when Pope Damasus I asked his secretary to translate the Bible into Latin, the so-called "vulgar tongue."

That translation became known as the Vulgate, and the secretary was Saint Jerome. Saint Jerome would spend the better part of the next 15 years in the city of Bethlehem, translating the Bible from Hebrew and Greek.

In the Hebrew Bible, a generic term, peri, is used for the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. In his book Aguecheek's Beef, Belch's Hiccup, and Other Gastronomic Interjections, Professor Robert Appelbaum -- Yes! the professor's name is actually Apple-baum! -- describes the biblical provenance of the apple. [1]

Appelbaum, a professor of English literature at Sweden's Uppsala University, says that St. Jerome had  several options for translating peri. "But he hit upon the idea of translating peri as malus, which in Latin has two very different meanings. As an adjective, malus means bad or evil. As a noun it seems to mean an apple, in our own sense of the word, coming from the very common tree now known officially as the Malus pumila."

The Malus pumila is the species name of the apple tree.

So malus means bad or evil like "malice," but it's also a word for apple. St. Jerome made a pun!

So, if the Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge wasn't an apple, what was it?

Re-read the passage from Genesis 3, above. Though you won't find the word "apple," you will find the name of another fruit ...

What fruit is mentioned specifically in Genesis 3?

... and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.

Fig! It is much more likely that the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge was a fig.

>> This also explains, by the way, why Jesus curses the fig tree! Read more about this here.

The Hebrew word peri could be basically any fruit. According to Appelbaum, "Rabbinic commentators variously characterized it as a fig, a pomegranate, a grape, an apricot, a citron, or even wheat. Some commentators even thought of the forbidden fruit as a kind of wine, intoxicating to drink."

In Saint Jerome's time, even the word malus could refer to any fleshy, seed-bearing fruit, such as a pear, a peach, or even a fig.

Michelangelo actually gets it right:

Michelangelo, Sistine Chapel, The Fall of Man and the Expulsion from Eden

Look at the leaves in Michelangelo's depiction of the Fall. Those are fig leaves! Before reading this, didn't you, like me, just assume it was an apple tree?

It was actually a 1504 engraving by Albrecht Dürer that marks the shift from fig to apple, from the Italian Renaissance to the Northern Renaissance.

What is the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil? Wait ... Fig Leaf Clothing?

So, we've had the First Sin, right? Original Sin. For more on what actually happened at the Original Sin and how this relates to Lent and Jesus' Temptations in the Desert, read this.

Next, God shows up in the Garden. Adam and Eve hide. They know they messed up.

God says, "Where are you?" (As if He didn't know.)

Slowly, they creep out of hiding, and God asks, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?"

Game over. Adam and Eve confess their sin. Sort of. Adam points his finger at Eve, God, and the serpent, but not himself. Adam blames every other person on earth, but himself. Eve is far more contrite.

So what is this? The First Confession in human history.

We've now had the First Sin and the First Confession - what comes next?

The First Penance in human history.

Let me ask you a question. A Louisiana boy like myself takes fig trees and summer fig-picking for granted, but have you ever felt a fig leaf or fig sap? It's probably the itchiest substance known to mankind.

Now imagine making clothes with fig leaves and covering your private areas with these extremely itchy leaves. Bad idea!

Here's that COMIC I promised:

Those fig leaf clothes were the First Penance! I would even argue they were the first "hair shirts."

This isn't my joke. The credit belongs to my Scripture professor, the eminently amazing Dr. Brant Pitre. Please go read all of his books:

So the Apple's Not an Apple - What If the Serpent's Not a Serpent?

Now, what if I told you the serpent wasn't really a serpent?? What if the little garter snake in Dürer's 1504 engraving, above, isn't at all what is depicted in the Bible? Check out that article here:

Also, what happened after the Fall and Original Sin? What was God's plan to fix what Adam and Eve messed up? Read about the Protoevangelium here - this is where God lays out his plan of redemption with three prophesies.

  1. The first confession was not contrite. It may have been an invalid confession. They were blaming each other.
If they would have been truly contrite maybe things would have been different.

    1. Possibly, that's interesting. I would say that Eve's confession was much more contrite than Adam's.

    2. Your all crazy and mad and don't have a clue what you are talking about. The fruit was the fruit of the flesh. Eve had sex with Lucifer and conceived Cain, and she gave to her husband also who was with her and she concieved Adam. Cain and Abel was a twin birth, Cain coming out first because Lucifer inseminated the first egg, then Adam inseminated the second egg. It doesn't say she knew her husband again after Cain was born it says immediately (and again she bear). Cain was Lucifer's son and Abel was Adam's son. They were fraternal twins not identical. So stop acting like you know everything because you don't know anything according to the garbage your spewing out here, your a liar and God hates a liar. So be very careful with your lies your telling, you could get in a lot of trouble with God by telling His people lies. If a man come to you and not understand the words of this book there is no Spirit in him, he speaks from his own abilities. (e.g.) His own so called worldly education. So stop listening to your so called professor's and listen to the Holy Spirit if He is truely in you. The Holy Spirit is given to you that you may know the mysteries of the Kingdom. The Holy Spirit will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things that He has said. So stop fooling yourselves and listen to the Spirit and not another man or woman listen to God, if He is truely in you you need not anyone else to teach you. What could be greater than the creator Himself teaching you.

  2. Scott Smith is correct according to my research. The clue to the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil is the mention of fig leaves being used to cover their nakedness. Not addressed by Scott Smith is what was the fruit on the Tree of Life that bestows immortality if eaten? The Bible has the answer. Note that in Genesis God stations the Cherubim to prevent access to the tree (Gen 3:24) by Adam and Eve. Later, we are told that Solomon decorated the Temple in Jerusalem with Cherubim and Palm Trees (1 Kings 7:36, Ezekiel 41:25)). Palm trees bear dates as their fruit. Ergo the Date Palm is apparently the Tree of life in the Garden of Eden.

  3. God is supposed to know everything that is and was and shall be? So he must have known that Adam and Eve would sin, therefore creating an inescapable trap of sorts. Common sense dictates that this is a very cruel thing to do, so if there is a God, he's very mean.

  4. Seriously? Everyone knows that it is a proverbial fruit...right? That Cain is the fruit that produced from original sin? That is why his offerings where not accepted and why he killed Abel. That's why they realized they were naked and had shame.....immediately after this Adam "knew" Eve and Abel was conceived. She noticed that the tree was "a delight to the eyes and to be desired"......

  5. My research indicates Genesis is an ANTI-THESIS. So, what is the earlier THESIS that it is refuting? Its the Mesopotamian myth about man's origins (Sumerian and Babylonian). In these myths man is portrayed as originally being a naked, hairy animal, wandering with wild animals in the EDIN as his companions, they are herbivores, specifically antelope and wild cattle. There is no woman for him (see Enkidu in the Epic of Gilgamesh, who wanders the EDIN). Because he is a wild hairy, naked beast, he possesses no knowledge of good and evil, just as the beasts possess no knowledge of good and evil. Then the gods remove him from the EDIN, and have him care for their fruit-tree gardens they have planted in the EDIN, within their cities they built for themselves. The gods must eat earthly food or they will starve to death, having bodies of flesh. Man will end the back-breaking work for the gods in caring for their gardens in the EDIN, giving the gods an eternal rest from physical toil. Man is a lowly, wretched, gardening slave for the gods. Genesis rejects this notion. God did not make man a naked hairy beast, to wander EDIN with herbivores for companions, and possessing no knowledge of Good and Evil. God made man to be the ruler of the world, and rule over the Creation. The gods send a flood to destroy man, whom they despise, for his noise disturbs their rest by day and sleep by night. The Hebrews deny this, God destroyed man for being evil and shedding his fellowman's blood. At the end of the flood the god Enlil of Nippur is outraged to learn a man has built an ark and humans have been spared. He wanted ALL HUMANS DEAD! With their demise, he would have his rest by day and sleep by night. He looks forward to the SEVENTH DAY of the Flood as his day of rest, with all of mankind decimated, peace and quiet engulfs all the earth. Genesis refutes this explanation of how a god rested on a SEVENTH DAY, it was after a creation of the world, not the destruction of the world. 6. e V e = twice wise virgin that spoke to serpent
Isis is the virgin serpent goddess of double wisdom in Assur's(Osiris) garden.

The same or daughter of Isis, the Great Mother Goddess. The first of our kind i.e., H. SapienS SapienS.

The first kingdoms were grain based economies. Ergot was the fruit in the midst of the garden. It didn't kill them, it gave them 'Hawk Eye' vision.
How could the lowly serpent overrule God? She knew the antidote.

The Soma Sacrament in Egypt was imbibed in the form of bread and beer. They ate the "bread of eternity," and drank the "beer of everlastingness." The Eye of Heru was in the bread. The antidote was in the beer. The bread without the beer was poison. The beer without the bread was poison.

    The line of kings that sprang from the womb of Isis ruled the world for 3,000 years. Including the Isis~Sons the Essenes. That's right; J+Isis aka Iesous(Iesus) his original name. Before Isis and the invention of weaving most of the world was naked or wore animal skins. Isis' original name was aSt. The name of the throne Isis creates is called the Ass. The story of the king;

    King James Version
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

SoLoMoN, a Pagan king. Known as a Sun King. The sun kings from the womb of Isis.

"Clement of Alexandria and St. Cyril of Jerusalem considered the Greek form Iesous to be the original, even going so far as to interpret it as a true Greek name and not simply a transliteration of Hebrew." just scratching the surface.

Quit swallowing the Herupean' fiction of the Christian era. That's what's wild and wacky and doesn't make a shred of SeNSe. The Pagan foundation legend is the best preserved pre-history we have. I'll stick to what's humanly possible and leave the BS mainstream religions to the fools. All that's left of Isis' religion is embedded within Christianity. The Entire IESOUS(Greek original) legend is derived from Isis' religion. Every significant feature. Iesus becomes the Beard-of-Isis i.e., J+Isis~Jesus. The Temple of Isis was sacrificed.

  7. So God told Adam and Eve that they’d die if they ate the fruit and then the serpent said he was lying because he didn’t want them to have knowledge, then they ate the fruit, didn’t die and gained knowledge. Who’s the bad guy here?

    1. Trick question! You're the bad guy for defending the devil, lol. But no, they did die immediately upon violating God's law. Their immortal souls suffered mortal sin. Death not only entered them, but the entire world through them. The devil was relying on the same lie as you - that physically they're still alive, despite being dead spiritually. There's still so much of this in the world.

      Delete
    2. Scott Smith. Honestly that seems like an obvious cop out. Any time anyone says if you eat something you will die it’s very literal. If you have an exact translation that says spiritual death then please post it. Further god has, up until very recently in history, been viewed as cruel and vengeful (referring to a previous post). You can ask the Hebrews if you need to.

Also the snake in the garden was never referenced as the devil in original text. Translated versions may have taken some artistic liberties and placed him in the story, but like I said the serpent was never called the devil. It was only called a serpent, not even a snake. And not once called Lucifer, the true name of the devil.

    4. To be honest even Lucifer being the devil is a modern construct. The idea of the devil was most likely popularized by Puritans. The devil was almost unmentioned in most biblical texts until recent history. Most likely it was a construct to refer to any group or individual that didn’t agree with the dominant ideology. Label them as evil tempters and the threat is more or less disarmed. Those who accept the “devil” are ostracized and those who don’t are accepted and provided for. Almost a death sentence for anyone who doesn’t agree with the community in pre-industrialized times.

Ergot would have killed the ancients by merely touching it. Again, How could the lowly serpent goddess of double wisdom overrule Assur(El/God)? She knew the antidote.

Gangrene~ from Ergot. Grain fungus fruit.
from medical Greek gangraina "an eating or gnawing sore," literally "that which eats away,"

This is death for an ancient.

God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’ “You will not surely die,” the serpent told her.

The Homo sapiens sapiens will now rule the world. Assur(El/Osiris) was once wise, Homo sapiens. He created the first hereditary kingdoms in the world. Our new economy following the great deluge post the collapse of the ice age 10,000BC. Assur the God of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry built an Archonship, a Ship-of-State, a Monarch.

  10. Some PhD scholars understand that Genesis' Garden of Eden myth, and Adam and Eve, is actually in response to, and in refutation of, an earlier Mesopotamian account about the origins of mankind in a location called EDIN by the Sumerians. EDIN in Sumerian means "Wilderness" whereas 'EDEN, in Hebrew, means "DELIGHT." Professor Morris Jastrow Jr. of the Department of Semitic Languages, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, opined in 1898, in a professional Journal, that Adam and Eve were actually recasts of Enkidu and Shamhat in the Epic of Gilgamesh. That is to say the bedrock upon which Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are founded, is the Mesopotamian myths about man's origin in the EDIN, and the Epic of Gilgamesh. So, WHY is Genesis refuting the Mesopotamian account about man's origins in the EDIN? The Mesopotamians agreed with Genesis that man is indeed a sinner and rebel, and a shedder of blood! But they offered a reason for this sinful behavior that was unacceptable to Genesis' author! The Mesopotamians understood man was a sinner because he had been made in the image of the gods who were portrayed as being sinner-gods! Every sin ever engaged in by Man, had earlier been engaged by the sinner-gods, before man's creation! Man's sinfulness was NOT man's fault, its the gods' fault, for having made man in their sinful image! Not many today are aware of all this. For more info google "Mattfeld, Adam and Eve, Enkidu and Shamhat."

  11. In 2010 I self-published a book titled Eden's Serpent: Its Mesopotamian Origins. It is available at Amazon.com from various booksellers. This book explores the search for the pre-biblical origins of Eden's Serpent in Ancient Near Eastern Myths, by Liberal PhD scholars, from 1854 to 2010. I quote the words of these PhD scholars as to who they think is behind Eden's Serpent and why they hold their beliefs.

After presenting other scholars' research I then present my own research, which like theirs, is based on pre-biblical Mesopotamian myths about man's origins in a location called EDIN in the Sumerian language.

Eden's god warns Adam: "Don't eat, you will die!" in the garden of Eden.

Mesopotamian myth has this warning being given by the Sumerian god En-Ki/E-A at Eridu to his servant Adaba (Babylonian Adapa).

When Adaba/Adapa is presented the forbidden food, contra Adam, he REFUSES to eat, obeying his god's warning, thereby he loses out on immortality for himself and mankind. Man has been conned by his trickster god, En-Ki (E-A).

The forbidden food offered Adaba was by two gate guards in heaven, Dumuzi and Ningishzida, on Anu's behalf. Other myths reveal Dumuzi became a serpent to escape his captors. While Ningishzida is portrayed as a bearded male god with serpent-dragon heads erupting from his shoulders, he also appears as a four-legged winged and horned serpent-dragon in Mesopotamian art and he is addressed as USHUM-GAL, meaning "great Serpent-dragon." Dumuzi also has this same title, USHUMGAL. So, in Mesopotamian myth, man (Adaba/Adapa) was offered forbidden food of death by two gods who were associated with serpents. They could assume human and animal (serpent dragon) forms in myths. Man's Creator, En-Ki/E-A of Eridu was also called an Ushumgal, or great serpent-Dragon. So, according to this myth EDIN'S serpent-dragon or Ushumgal, Enki/EA, was man's Creator, and the owner of the garden in EDIN at Eridu. Genesis refutes all of this of course. Man disobeyed and lost out on immortality, whilst Adapa obeyed and lost out. This is called an inversion of the Mesopotamian myth of why man is not immortal.

For the Mesopotamians man is a sinner, rebel and murdered because he was made in the image of Sinner-gods who engaged in these activities BEFORE man's creation. So, it is not man's fault he is a sinner and rebel, its the god's fault, in whos image he was made. Of course, Genesis denies this, for Genesis' God is not a sinner god, he is holy and righteous and he expects man, made in his image, to be righteous too.

    Why did En-Ki/E-A "con" Adapa/Adaba?

He made man to be his gardening slave at Eridu. If man is allowed to be a god, who then will bear the back-breaking toil in Eridu's garden? The gods will have to do this and lose their eternal rest from physical toil. They created EDIN'S gardens to provide food for themselves, but tiring of the labor, they make man to be their gardening slave.

  14. Hello, I just noticed this post is from 2020, but reading the comments, I saw only one mention of Ezekiel 28:11-19 (the true first sin) although the post is about “what fruit” was eaten. But it is good to know that Satan committed the first sin long before humans came along. His sin was Pride. You can read God’s words in Ezekiel 28 and in Isaiah 14:16. Some will say it is the King of Babylon (human) but if you understand the Structure of Satan’s Kingdom (yes he has one) then you will understand too that the human “king” of any earthly place is considered a “prince” to the dark powers and principalities. And the dark entity in Satan’s kingdom is the “King” (not human but demonic) and puppeteers the human king (prince to them) This is all spiritual. Instead of arguing or belittling each other, try uniting your thoughts and considering you don’t have all the facts. There is much to learn, help each other, don’t have a battle of witts. It only leads to no real answers. As for the fruit, I can say that because God said you can eat from it, that it had something edible. Eve mentioned a fruit, then, yes, there must of been a fruit. However, when you look up all the scriptures that mention the Tree of Knowledge, you will find that it is not JUST a fruit, but also a metaphor for good and evil. Reading those scriptures will help you understand it’s meaning. Ex: You will know them by their fruits. (You will know who is of good or evil by their actions because a good tree will only yield good fruits and a bad tree only bad fruits). Could it be the fig? The Bible does not say so, but the type of fruit is not what matters. What matters is the disobedience to God and because of it, Sin entered every single human through Adam & Eve. It is why Jesus became flesh and died on the cross. The entire Bible points to Jesus (from Old Testament to New Testament) John1:1 In the beginning was the WORD, and the WORD was with GOD, and the WORD was GOD. God made all things, even evil. He made EVERYTHING & EVERYONE with a Purpose. He gave you free will to make the free choice to follow him or not to follow him. He wants only those who believe in his son, and worship him in spirit and in truth. He didn’t want to force anyone to follow him. They have a choice. Some believe, others don’t. He loves them all, but not all love him back.

  15. Could it be there was no "fruit" at all? Perhaps a bulb! Like that of a poppy!! Seems indicative in words like "feeling cold," "naked in shame," that the true impetus of our first sin was to become intoxicated, thereby bending God's gifts of beauty for an imagined one, contradicting the whole point of being offered paradise in the first place.

  16. The fig tree fits the tree of knowledge of good and evil, because the fig tree is used in the Bible to represent Israel being the keeper of the laws (knowledge) of good and evil.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think that even the fig tree is symbolic. The fruit is the desire to be like God.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Only it can’t be a fig because figs dont make you feel like god and certainly dont kill you by any metaphorical means. Its a fruiting body of a mushroom and its tree is hidden in the earth as a mycelium network. Psilocybin can easily makes you fee like god (from experience) and gives you an ego death that literally psychologically makes you feel like you die. (Also from experience)Try it out. 19. Hello it was not an apple and it was not a fig either. Come on!!! It was mushrooms!! They call mushrooms fruit bodies when they grow into the mushroom . It is called a fruit an it opens your eyes to all and makes you super wise.. endless knowledge just pouring in. And the serpent was a serpent ... It was not a dragon.. I love dragons but am scared of snakes when I have no reason to really be scared of them but I'm terrified of them.. but I Believe that the world is being pulled back and forth from a serpent to a dragon.. the dragon is good.. the snake it's not. I remember being in the garden of Eden. I am remember being approached by something but it didn't really come outta the shadows. I could only see it's eyes glowing yellow. I will never forgot those eyes because all this time later I saw those same eyes in the shadows one night and it was my boyfriend at the time who I believe to be a snake, the devil. He is truly evil I'm so glad I left him after 5 years I truly think he was pure evil an a snake I seen those eyes. It was him in the garden that day. Jeez goosebumps
